Chickens: Enhancing Soil Health

The photos feature my youngest son raking up the bedding where our chickens have been living this past Summer. During these months, they have dug and scratched and eaten through their space. We have thrown a lot of our compostable materials out there which they worked into the bedding. Plus their natural body functions have added lots of nutrients to the mix. All this was taken up and put in the blue barrel you see. It will be mixed with our other composts and spread on the property, grow beds, pots, and worm factory. This will either increase nutrient value to the mix or directly to the property. The mix will also be used to produce microbial teas to increase beneficial bacteria numbers in our system. Animals really help build soil health in our urban food setup. Healthy soil. Healthier ecosystem. Healthier food.
